The Kid

-The City of Salvation-

Shadow Demon stood atop the roof of the University of the City of Salvation, looking out at the city below him, and the church looming in the distance. He had failed, and he was not happy about it. Shadow grabbed a tile from the roof of the University and threw it off into the night, and after a short pause he heard it smash into the ground somewhere off in the distance. He grinned, before picking up more and more tiles off the roof, and stacking them together, forming a long, high, tower of roof tiles that glistened in the night. Shadow stuck out his hand, and, using his index finger, pushed the giant tower of tiles off of the roof and crashing down into the ground out the front of the university. Shadow burst out in laughter as he did, letting his laugh reach high enough so that the whole City of Salvation could hear him. Suddenly, he heard shouts out in the distance, coming closer to him. Shadow stood his ground, as two burly security guards walked toward the university.

Security Guard 1
It’s that Shadow Demon character again Tom, I just know it!

Tom
Shuddap would ya Norm, who cares if it’s him. And if it is, we get to hand him back in to the lord, and then we won’t have to do this job anymore!

Norm
Isn’t he supposed to be dangerous or something? I mean, I heard he does have some pretty freaky powers...

Tom
Norm, come on, this guys nothing to worry about. He’s Corey’s own creation, and hell, Corey said he could defeat him easily, so he should be nothing to worry about Normie.

Norm
I hope you’re right...

The two security guards walked through the gate leading into the University, their flashlights illuminated the scene in front of them. Shadow Demon looked down at them, giggling quietly. They flashed their torches all around the entrance garden of the University.

Tom
Come out, come out, wherever you are Shadow Demon...

Tom drew his gun as he spoke, and Norm did the same. They looked around the garden a few moments, before hearing the giggling above them, and looking up to the roof, to see Shadow Demon with one hand resting on another tower of tiles. The men looked up, their eyes wide.

Norm
Are you...

Shadow Demon
Shadow Demon?! Yeah, well, that’s what they call me around these parts...

Tom
NORM, SHOOT HIM!

But Tom was too late, and Shadow pushed the tower of tiles off of the roof, sending them crashing down onto the two men. They both tried to dodge it, but were too slow, and the stack of tiles crashed into them, some smashing into their heads, others missing them and slamming into the ground. Shadow then laughed at them, before running to the end of the university, and leaping to the next building along. He continued running, and laughing, as the cool night’s breeze swept across his face. Back where the two guards lay covered in pieces of metal and dust from the tiles. Both men were bleeding, and Norm was unconscious, while Tom couldn’t feel his legs. Tom was still conscious though, and slowly tried to lift himself to his feet, but the pain was too much.

He looked to his left side, and saw Norm, also covered in tiles, not moving. He then turned his head to his right side, and saw his portable radio lying a little more than an arm’s reach. Slowly, he pulled himself towards it, and then stretched his arm over to it, and picked it up. He held down the switch that broadcasted to all channels. And then, with a jumpy voice, began speaking into it.

Tom
Shadow...Demon...is here...

And then with all the strength he could muster, spoke in once again.

Tom
Kill the fucker...

And then he fell unconscious.

Shadow Demon kept jumping from roof top to roof top, laughing madly as he did so. It wasn’t long though, before he saw lights go on all around him, and heard the screeching of tires in the distance. Someone was looking for him. He could tell. Did the City of Salvation have police? Or maybe some sort of National Guard? He laughed to himself, wondering if Corey’s police force would be douches just like him. He resumed his run, but as he did saw a police car pull up on the road beneath him and begin firing up at him. He dodged the bullets narrowly as he jumped onto the roof of what he believed was a market of some sort. He looked off into the distance and could see the church was closer now, and that was the only place he could go to.

But if he did choose to jump to the church, he would have nowhere to go. He’d be surrounded. Frantically he searched for another place to go...

Salvation City Policeman
SAY YOUR PRAYERS MOTHERFUCKER!!

Shadow turned and saw that nearly the entire City of Salvation Police Force had pulled up around the front of the market. And these weren’t just any ordinary policemen, they were armed as if they were about to go off and fight in World War III. The funny thing was they all had AK-47 Assault Rifles, which any person would know were commonly terrorist weapons. They also appeared to be equipped with Frag grenades and SMG’s. Shadow let out a loud, screeching laugh and back flipped over the back edge of the market, just as the police force began firing. The bullets whizzed over his head, as he landed on solid ground out the back of the market. As he landed, he was about to run off, when he saw a boy sitting cross-legged, eating a banana which still had the price tag printed on the side of it. He was about six or seven, and was wearing a dirty T-shirt, and shorts that were torn in places. He had no shoes on.

Boy
What’s going on out there mister?

Shadow turned to him and grinned.

Shadow Demon
Well, uh, I’m being chased you see, and I REALLY NEED TO GET GOING NOW!

He was about to take off without the kid, but there was an innocence in his eyes that cut so deep into him that he couldn’t just let him stay. If he left him there, the police would find him with what was obviously a stolen banana, and the way Corey was they’d probably have him executed just for that. So Shadow quickly grabbed the kids arm, and lifted him onto his shoulder.

Shadow Demon
Come on kiddo, we gotta make tracks!

Shadow took off as fast as he could, hearing the shouts and gunshots of the huge police force behind him.

Boy
Where are we going mister?

Said the kid, still eating his banana while sitting on Shadow’s back.

Shadow Demon
Good question...

Suddenly, he saw and to the side of him, and without a moment of hesitation, ran down it, before jumping up onto one wall, pushing off of it, and then, seeing and open window in one of the houses, jumped into it, slamming the window shut behind him. They sprawled into what appeared to be a woman’s bedroom. There was a counter with a mirror on it on the right side, with countless perfumes and jewellery splayed out on it, but Shadow only had eyes for the double bed in the centre. He quickly bent over so the boy could get off his back.

Boy
Sir, what are we doing?

Shadow Demon
We’re playing hide and seek with a bunch of murderous bastards, now come on!

Shadow pulled the kid under the bed with him, put one hand over his mouth, and the other over the kid’s mouth. The boy seemed to understand, and didn’t make a single sound. Shadow listened closely, and could hear the policemen searching the alley, looking for signs of him. After about five or so minutes, they appeared to give up, and he could hear groaning and complaining as the footsteps got further and further away until he couldn’t hear anything. Then, and only then, did Shadow take his hands of their mouths. The boy let out a loud, excited breathe.

Boy
Wow that was fun mister, can we do it again?!

Shadow Demon
Not on your life buddy, I’ve got too many other things to worry about to have another close shave like that again. Cmon, get out.

The kid rolled out from under the bed, and Shadow did too. The boy quickly went up to the window and looked out.

Boy
Who were they mister?

Shadow Demon
Some police force, I wouldn’t like to get on their bad side if I were you. How did you get here anyway kiddo?

The kid stopped and appeared to think. And think. And think. Shadow finally grew impatient, and stamped his foot down exaggeratedly.

Shadow Demon
Ahem?

Boy
I don’t really know sir...I was with mummy at the train station one minute, playing with Scratch, and the next...I was here.

Shadow laughed, walked over to the kid and then stuck out his hand toward him. The kid looked at the hand, as if unsure of what to do.

Shadow Demon
Put her there buddy!

Boy
Sorry sir?

Shadow Demon
I mean, gimmie a handshake, and I’ll wish you well on your future endeavours before I high-tail it out of here!

The kid stared at him, and then back at the hand, and then back at him. Then he put his hand into Shadow’s, and Shadow shook it hard, giving him a long, high and low hand shake.

Shadow Demon
See ya buddy!

But as Shadow tried to let go, and turned away, the boy held onto his hand. Shadow felt the resistance, and turned back to face the kid, who was staring up at him with pleading eyes.

Boy
Let me come with you mister, please!

Shadow Demon ran his hand through his hair.

Shadow Demon
Ahh...I dunno kiddo...I’ll be doing some pretty grown-up stuff...

The kid looked into him, again with those innocent eyes. Eventually, Shadow conceded, and agreed.

Shadow Demon
Alright, well, as long as ya don’t get in my way, and make your own fake ID, you can roll with me, and I’ll help ya find your parents, aight?

The kid nodded his head, and grabbed onto Shadow’s arm.

Shadow Demon
Alrighty kiddo, come on...

The boy jumped in excitement, following Shadow as he walked toward the door. Shadow was about to open it, when the kid suddenly stopped him.

Boy
Don’t do that mister!

Shadow Demon
Why not?

Boy
There’s bad guys-

Just before the door burst open and members of the police force stormed in and began firing, Shadow grabbed the kid, and holding him to his chest, kicked open the window and jumped out, the bullets slamming in to the window behind him. Luckily, at the back of the alley there was a large garbage bin, and that was directly what Shadow and the kid fell into. Shadow quickly brushed a banana peel off of his face, pulled the boy onto his shoulder, and climbed out of the bin before racing back up down the alley. The kid screamed as the police force smashed through the ground level door, and out of the apartment. They fired at Shadow but he was already off around the corner, ducking past people out partying, amid shouts of ‘That’s him!’ and ‘Gets that fucker!’ Shadow shoved the people away, and kept on running.

Suddenly, he saw an abandoned police car in the distance. He knew how to hotwire, so he’d just have to smash the window and hotwire as fast as possible. He’d almost reached the car when he heard the police force not too far off behind him, but they obviously couldn’t shoot because of the crowd. As Shadow made a run for the car, a particularly nasty looking guy wearing biker clothes and a beard jogged up to him, and attempted to smash his head in with a baseball bat, but Shadow was one step ahead of him, and through his knife into the man’s throat. Shadow pulled it out of his throat, and ran up to the police car. Quickly, he put the boy down, smashed the window and opened the back and front doors.

Shadow Demon
Get in kiddo!

Shadow then got in himself, and began to hotwire the car. He hotwired as fast as he could, and had the car on within a few seconds. He grinned, closed the door, and slammed down on the accelerator, turning down into the road.

Shadow Demon
Get your head down back there!

The boy quickly dropped his head down, and just as well, because as soon as he did the back window was ripped to shreds by the gunfire of the police force. They had also got into their vehicles and were firing their AK-47’s through their side windows. Shadow turned around a corner, trying to find someplace he could drive into, and lose them. Shadow looked back behind him, and looked straight down the barrel of one of the policemen’s gun. He quickly put his face back behind his seat, and this time the front windshield and the passenger seat were raked by bullets. As the policemen stopped to reload, Shadow yelled back to the kid.

Shadow Demon
You ok kiddo?!

Boy
Yes mister. How are we going to get out though?!

Shadow Demon
I might have an idea, hold on!

Shadow swung the car towards the university, where he had first been spotted on this crazy night. And without a blink of hesitation, he drove the car through the gates, and then into the university itself! He smashed straight through the main corridor, smashing past all the furniture. Shadow grinned as he could only heard cars crashing behind him. He’d made this turn because he’d noticed before that all the cars the other policemen were driving were four-wheel drives, while he’d found the car that some of the unarmed policemen must have been using. Now that he’d driven in through the tight space, most of the others couldn’t follow. Shadow then ducked as they smashed through the back exit of the university, and out into the road that led across from a small ravine which a lake flowed through. Shadow thought no one was following them anymore, and was about to turn around and talk to the kid, but that was when he heard the sound of a grenade dropping into the car.

Shadow quickly looked at the grenade, and then at the kid. With great speed, he grabbed the kid, and jumped out of the back door with him. They both flew out of the car, and into the lake, which luckily was quite deep. They hit the water at full force, and instantly Shadow’s world became a murky blue. He saw the kid floating next to him, and grabbed him by the hand, leading him up toward the surface. They both surfaced, and the kid began coughing.

Shadow Demon
You ok there boyo?

When the kid had finished coughing, he spoke erratically.

Boy
Yeah! Oh my mister, can we do that again? Can we?! PLEASE?!

Because that’s all me and KID can do this week; compete to the best of our ability, and try our hardest to win. Because, after all, it does come down to who wants it more, doesn’t it?

You bet it does.

That’s why when we go out there, there will be no bullshit, no dirty tactics, none of the usual crap you’d expect from one Chuck Matthews.

I’ll give it to you Chuck, you made quite an entrance last week, and it’s good to have you back, but overall you’re just another wrestler. You’re just another opponent who can be beaten the same way as everyone else.

So is Brenton, isn’t he? I mean, we can all be beaten; it’s just a matter of who wants it more. I can guarantee you whichever team wants it more will win this week, and I want it so bad you wouldn’t believe it.

This week, I repay KID.

This week, I win the tag titles for the third time.

This week, marks the return of the Carnival of Violence.
